Is Invisalign® as Effective as Braces?

Your smile is one of the first things others notice about you, but what if you don’t feel terribly comfortable revealing your teeth? If you’re bothered by your smile, due to factors such as crookedness, crowding, or gaps, braces are no longer your only option.

Invisalign® is a very popular alternative to braces, with over 5 million people per year in the United States having benefited in recent years. Whether you’re an adult who would rather not sport braces at business meetings or the parent of a teenager who finds the metal of braces unappealing, Invisalign has a lot to offer.

At Kiran Rapal, DDS, Inc. in the San Francisco Bay area of California, Dr. Rapal and her staff are pleased to provide Invisalign for straighter, healthier teeth. Read on to learn more about this treatment and how it compares to traditional braces.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign uses custom-molded, clear aligners to gradually shift your teeth into better alignment. You wear them over your teeth and remove them to eat, drink (besides water), brush, and floss, as an alternative to metal braces. Every 1-2 weeks, you’ll swap your “trays” out for your next set. Because they’re virtually invisible to the naked eye, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

Invisalign corrects the same issues braces do, including:

Invisalign versus braces

Many people appreciate having clear aligners versus a “mouth full of metal” during Invisalign treatment. Invisalign also works more quickly than conventional braces. Our patients typically require 9-15 months of Invisalign treatment, compared to the 18-24 months commonly needed for braces.

As far as effectiveness, Invisalign is very effective at treating the same mild-to-moderate orthodontic problems that traditional metal braces do. If you have more severe problems, such as large gaps between your teeth, intense crowding, or especially short teeth, you may do better with braces.

Otherwise, as long as you follow your Invisalign treatment plan, wearing and caring for your aligners as directed, you can expect a smile you can feel more confident about by the end of your prescribed treatment period. We may also provide aligners to continue wearing only at night for long-lasting results.

Getting started with Invisalign

Once we determine that you’re a good candidate for Invisalign treatment, we create a digital scan of your entire mouth to upload to the Invisalign software, which creates a treatment plan for moving your teeth into ideal positions. We can even show you a video of what your smile will look like after treatment. We send the information to a lab, where your aligners will be created.

At your next appointment, we make sure your trays fit perfectly, including making adjustments so the aligners do not irritate your gums, and place temporary tooth-colored attachments on your teeth to help the aligners do their work. We’ll also go over your home care instructions, such as how to clean your trays.
