Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Many people who get scared going to the dentist put off important dental work, and that can lead to serious oral health complications. Sedation dentistry provides a stress-free experience for those who have anxiety or fear about dental procedures.

Dr. Rapal has advanced training in sedation dentistry through DOCS Education to ensure your safety and health. She and her team believe that going to the dentist should be an easy process, so she provides special medications to help you relax and find relief from your anxiety or fear about sitting in the dentist’s chair.

When is sedation dentistry helpful?

Sedation dentistry can be used for a wide range of procedures. Some people prefer to use sedation dentistry only for more in-depth procedures like a tooth extraction, while others may find that it helps to alleviate anxiety, even for simple procedures like teeth cleaning.

Dr. Rapal works with you to determine if sedation dentistry is right for you. She might recommend sedation if you have issues like:

  • Sensitive teeth
  • Trouble sitting still in the chair
  • An extreme gag reflex
  • A low pain threshold

If you need to have extensive dental work, Dr. Rapal may recommend that you undergo sedation dentistry if she plans to do multiple procedures in the same appointment. Speak with Dr. Rapal to determine your options for sedation dentistry if you avoid dental appointments because of anxiety or fear.

What can I expect during sedation dentistry?

During your sedation dentistry appointment, Dr. Rapal provides you with sedation medication orally. Soon after, you should begin to feel a sense of calm throughout your body. Sedation dentistry allows you to stay calm but awake for your treatment. All throughout your appointment, you are kept comfortable and monitored by the clinical team.

After your procedure is over, you spend time recovering from the sedation. Once you’re fully awake, you need to have someone drive you home.

If you’re putting off dental work because of fear, call the office today or use the online booking feature to schedule a sedation dentistry consultation.
